The “Carnival of Podence” is a centuries old tradition that takes place every winter in the Portuguese City of Podence. It is characterized by young men called Caretos, that dress up in colorful costumes and wooden masks, and run around the city jokingly antagonizing young women and locals. While the exact origins are unknown, the carnival dates back to old Celtic and Pagan traditions, and has evolved over hundreds of years. In modern times, it had become a tourist attraction for the town, and people from all over come to watch the Caretos run through the streets, and to partake in the many festivities (Costa, 2016).
