Modern Tradition: Image
In modern times, the Carnival in Podence has taken on new meaning to those that participate directly, as well as those that come to observe as tourists. The carnival as well as the “Caretos”, represent long running tradition that has been a part of rural Portugal for hundreds of years. It connects local heritage and culture with the modern world, by practicing the same traditions as generations past, but incorporating more people and driving an interest in the history of Podence (Costa,2016). The carnival has become a major tourist attraction, and many people from all over the world flock to the area to see the “Caretos” with their own eyes. It has become such an important part to the culture that it has been named an “Intangible World Heritage” by UNESCO, and there is an official organization of “Caretos” that plan and host the events in Podence every year.
